Absa for 5 years 13 percent I think, or buy flat and rent it, or buy some dollars in global account if you think rand will get worse, my mate got 18 percent from his old mutual equity broker last year..I sold most equities last year, was sick slump..us etfs also an idea but I reckon us market going get a big bang..good luck, equities been bit depressing last 2 years

I tried the renting for 2 years - the agency I hired stole 60K of the rental that the tenant paid :(

I have a global account

Lets see what happens with the equities - but I am losing patience

Hi Everyone,

Urgh, I am starting to lose patience.  I have alot of stocks in the red.

I would probably get about 5K guaranteed in interest with a depositor plus in ABSA if I invested my money in there.

I want to know if it eventually pays off to hold my stocks for about 5-10years - long term - collecting dividends and maybe even selling if I see a 20% capital gain within that period.  I know the answer is deep - and there is volatility etc.

It is about cycles, patience and some investing/trading knowledge - correct?

Metrofile was 60K in the negative but I held onto it for about 2 years and now it is in the green with a profit.

Can someone who has held onto stocks for longterm (5years) - kindly advise me?

Thanks,

Kind Regards,

Motivated

I am by no means a Financial Advisor but this is my checklist:

TFSA - FNB Share Builder (nice and easy. Don’t have to fuss about who or where. Monthly Debit Order of R2750 which automatically is invested to Ashburton Mid Cap and Top 40)

RA CONTRIBUTION - 27.5% of Salary (MASSIVE tax benefits)

SHARES / EQUITIES - Whatever is left over goes into 40% ETF, 10% Gamble, 50% “safe bets”

Ask yourself the hard questions...

Why did you buy in the first place...Does the answer still ring true.....Your circumstances as well as that of the investment change some quicker than others.

Do you feel things could change for the better with some or all your stocks.

Are some of your stocks immune to future sideways movement we've been exposed to.

Will some of the issues be resolved quickly & move upwards...(specifically your OMU holdings) turnaround underway at ELI....etc NHI coming through DSY

Are you in a position to take the loss & re-invest thus avoiding the same situation down the line.

These are some of the questions I've had to ask myself after 8 stagnant yrs in WSL whilst evaluating other potential investments.

I bought a townhouse to let out as part of my strategy...against many negative views but it's what's right for me not them.

Lastly some of this heavy selling is big boys re-balancing their portfolio's & others fleeing the imminent downgrade...

Yes it's not easy but getting it wrong is also part of the game.

My 2c

Cheers.

I think we are all in the same boat.

As new john says a percentage of savings in stock market is wiser.

Another option to look at is TFSA.

I am looking at this option now, any advise/suggestions on where to invest?

Thanks in advance

I’m pretty sure everyone will tell you more or less the same thing. I am however interested to hear everyone’s opinion too though.

My 10 cents? Most can’t cut it out in the equities investing “game” Why? Short term volatility. Short term in this environment is anything between 1 - 5 years.

Does that mean you should hold on? No, not necessarily. Everyone’s circumstances are unique. Your age, your cost of living, dependents. So on and so on.

My view and the way I’ve gone about it is easy. I allocate a PERCENTAGE of my investable income to stocks / equities. If I’m down, it’s only a PERCENTAGE of my savings that is affected.

Fortunately I have (RE: some) time on my hands so I can weather it through.

Invest smart. A PERCENTAGE of said equities should be on “gambles” and the rest on more reliable bets (I use the word bets purposefully)

Who knows, RSA May well go to the dogs and then we’re all F@&ked regardless. But that’s the point, there’s no clear, or even vague answer to your question as NO ONE can predict the future.
