Wat can we generally expect on a day that the futures closes out?
in my experience, the close out/rollover has minuscule influence on the price (apart from relatively small excursions from fair value at small time scales).
the last two days saw big volumes in both the jun and sep contracts. what is left will 'probably" roll over - eg today, the jun contract traded consistently above fair value and the sep one followed tightly. does this mean anything?
dunno, i left mine to rollover. my broker does this with no occurrence of brokerage charges.
best now...

Today from the morning it looked like guys were taking profits off the table on all the local shares on the bourse...ie not rolling forward their contracts!!
I may be wrong buy usually those who do not want to roll foward contracts, this is usually sold off in market day before!!
So tomorrow may be pure roll over for those who want to carry on holding... Dont think it will effect much in this scenario!!
My 2 c but i could be wrong because i do not play SSFs
True - could clearly see some funny action on a few counters and I really think futures close-out, option structures etc. played a role.

Guys,
Is it standard and a JSE requirement that a company release a trading update?
In particular, I ask about WSL?
What HDB said - according to JSE listing requirements :
( b ) Trading statements
All issuers, other than those who publish quarterly results, must comply
with the detailed requirements of paragraph 3.4( b )(i) to (viii). Issuers with a
policy of publishing quarterly results must comply with the general
principles contained in paragraph 3.4( b )(ix), but may also elect to comply
with paragraph 3.4( b )(i) to (viii) on a voluntary basis.
(i) Issuers must publish a trading statement as soon as they are satisfied
that a reasonable degree of certainty exists (refer to 3.4( b )(ii)) that
the financial results (refer to 3.4( b )(vi)) for the period to be reported
upon next will differ by at least 20% (or 15% if paragraph
3.4( b )(vii) is applicable) from the most recent of the following
(collectively referred to as the “base information”):
(1) the financial results for the previous corresponding period; or
(2) a profit forecast (in terms of paragraphs 8.35 to 8.44)
previously provided to the market in relation to such period.
Issuers may publish a trading statement if the differences
referred to in 3.4( b )(i) are less than 20% (or 15% if paragraph
3.4( b )(vii) is applicable), but which are viewed by the issuer as
being important enough to be made the subject of a trading
statement.
WSL last issued a trading update on 11 Oct 2013. Does not seem that they issue quarterly results...
