Competition proudly sponsored by Sharenet - Smarter investing, online

Simple Rules:

-Select any 5 shares listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, including staying in the money.

-Money symbol will be $$$ and will attract interest at 12% per annum.

-Share picks may be repeated i.e., you could choose SOL; SOL; $$$; CAE; CAE - that's 2 parts SOL and two parts CAE and one part $$$ of 1000

-Only one lot of share picks per Sharechat Handle will be allowed, which will be locked in till the end of the month's competition.

-All entries need to be posted to the month's competition threat on www.sharechat.co.za before the close of the first trading day.

-Cost (initial) price of any share will be determined by the offer price as at the end of the first trading day of the month's competition.

-Sale (final) price of any share will be determined by the bid price as at the end of the last trading day of the month's competition.

-No dividend will be added to a share's price to calculate its final price for the month.

-If a share is suspended during the month it has been chosen, and not reinstated before the end of that month's competition, the final price of that share will be considered to be 0 (zero).

Good luck!

If you discover a mistake in the spreadsheet please let me know. Thanks!

Suggestion that we change the rules so that one may not more than double up on any one share; i.e. UUU UUU SIM SIM DRD, but not three of any one.
It will really be boring if all start gambling on one share only (x5) to win.... I think the competition should be more than only the winning part!
Rgds.

I agree good suggestion
Toad, what say you?

I vote for the rule! Maybe three of 1 share max?

Not allowed to pick 4 or 5 of the same share...

What's the difference whether you wanna pick 5 different shares or all 5 the same?

In some cases you gonna win and in some you not.

But leo dont you think it will make the competition more hotly contested when your holdings isnt all in the same stock? Level things out a little?

I prefer the choice 1 of each. Maybe 2.
Its not good practice to have a portfolio of only 1 or 2 shares. More diversification will promote a more realistic competition, rather than the all or nothing prize chasers.

The leaderboard game is gambling because of the one month timeframe. To diversify gambling is a joke. I still would like to be able to take profit during the month.

I agree with you perre, I would never do that maybe 2 of the same but that's that.

I do however think it's an individual's choice to gamble this way. Very rarely will 1 stock picked 5 times outperform a diversified portfolio.

You have to be crazy or lucky to win with 1 stock x 5. But if one person does bully for them.

I vote max 2 parts of a share.

Will be interesting to see how many new users there are as soon as there are prizes to be won, hopefully the good 'spirit' of this competition won't decay.

In my picks ill have 2x registering users for the month Laughing

Lets let the pole be the decider on how many shares to include. So there needs to be a cut off for voting. Friday is the last trading day of the month, perhaps that should be the cut off for the vote?

And yes Leo if a person picks 5 and he wins then hey good for him, but that might make the competition a little one sided affair in certain months. Whereas if you pick a min of 3 shares (i.e 2 max per share) we will see a lot closer battles for the win. And isnt that what its all about? Having a FUN but tightly contested competition?

Each person has his own trading method and way he makes money. So Cutloss we cant cater for everyone. The weekly pick is to short for the fundamentalist and the yearly one to long for the techies. So lets compromise and keep the monthly one without any profit taking. Seems a fair trade off?

Leo,

Chances of picking 1 stock x 5 introduces a "do or die" situation, but as its not real money, you just restart every month.
Ill play for the fun of it, and also donate away if i win, but just a point for those wanting to learn.

Diversification decreases risk, does not necessarily increase profits (over the short term)
