the shares will also start trading on the New York Stock Exchange today. Investors in Gold Fields, now the fourth-largest producer of the metal, on Feb. 18 will receive one Sibanye share for each Gold Fields security, or one Sibanye American depositary receipt for every four in Gold Fields.

Thanks!! Got it now...

This was just a simple way to ring fence SA assets. If the government interfere too much in the affairs of mines then they will merely mothball the mines until matters inprove, but at least for international investors they are protected from government inteference - so current price for Sibanye may be relative, only dreamers thought it would get to R 52 per share
My opinion

what about shorting Sibanye and Long GFI ? wait till sibbanye fluff up a bit before shorting though - demand for new GFI and perhaps selling of people who got 'free' Sibanye but have neg view on SA mining for short/medium term - just a thought
any opinions?

The people that run our pension funds, experts expected SGL to open between R8 and R52. WTF !!!! How can there be such big gap.

Should we take a flier ?
