Can any of you guys who keep a trade for 500 to a 1000 pips tell me about your mental processes during such a trade, with reference to how you cope with 200 to 300 pip swings against you. Thank you kindly...

as soon as I am in a trade I stop monitoring the trade from close up, so watch on the 30 min or 1 hour, sometimes you lose profit but if the trade is going to run as soon as you are in the second day you can move the stop to whatever the movement of the 1st day was. if you can get it to the 3rd or 4th day stop looking at the amount and just look at the points, also generally I start with 5 contracts, the ones I get to 1000 with there is usually only one contract left, the rest have been sold of during the trade.

you win some you loose some.

and then sometimes you have a hart attack.

it all good.

For me, something I find helpful to handle the trauma on long term trades, is to decide exactly how much red I can stomach (in cash terms). Once I'm happy with that, and I can picture the pain in my mind beforehand, then I'm not really troubled when that red kicks in.

Keeping to small exposures (relative to account size), also gives lots of comfort!

Plasma my 2 recent 1000 point trades were purely luck and both shorts and never made more than 350 points on a long.Reason being that bulls take the steps and bears jump out of the windows,so what happens to me is that I rather bag profits but with my shorts just as I want to close it drops further and then I wait and voila 1000 points but longs have never gone up so quickly when I was long.Problem always is profit not taken could be lost when markets turn,I.e I went short yesterday at 43250 and was green 500 points but really saw 42000 coming and now down 200 points and that is the game.Go BEARS

The first goal is to ensure survival – avoid the risks that can empty your account and put you out of the trading business.  :)

Tend to agree (although she might go for 44000 futures?), 1.6 down and next day 1.5 up, me thinks mr market is setting herself up for a final dive soon, high VIX does this!

No reversal signal (candle) yet in my book so waiting patiently!

K, the cycle dates I get from a guy in the states but not my nr 1 indicator, sometimes they create short term swings so could have been spot on yesterday, but given the overall picture my charts not confirming a valid turn around as of yet, but just my view!

The 38.2 retracement of Intermediate III puts her exactly on the 42500 (cash) / 42770 (futures) area so that is the levels I am watching next week for an uber buying opportunity! B)

Let's see if the bulls had enough...should take some time forming a top again!

Ok, the bull in me can't stand this any longer.

Going contrarian.

1st long at 43205. Will add if she goes lower.

Taking profits at 43560. Will let a tiny bit run to day end.

Africa will never be regarded as adult until all of its organisations stop admiring and protecting criminal dictators.

MSM et al presents (sponsored) opinion as fact and seeks to indoctrinate. Journalists without ethics proliferate in a swamp of filthy lucre (BBC inclusive).

In response to decades of racism by fearful minority whites called apartheid there will be an eternity of racism by revengeful majority blacks called all kinds of excuses.

Corruption is not yet compulsory but it may as well be - Aggressive africanization uses the racist Employment Equity Act as a club.

Too many humans are too busy copulating to bother about the irresponsible, unsustainable and progressively catastrophic population explosion.

Whilst humanity prevails so will evil. Evil will survive and thrive through sophisticated indoctrination and other conscience-suppressing disguises.

Desmond Tutu has been praying for the downfall of the ANC since 2011. Clearly he needs some assistance with such a difficult and worthy task..

Cockroaches still lurk on sharechat because it is prime real estate for their con artistry, duping and grand theft.

Bottom gap closed but the one above still beckons for a tad more attention.

1st target (Safex fut) = 46000 (from double bottom)

This should bring the nay sayers.

just about ANYTHING may be used to trade on - given discipline and strict adherence to the underlying system, imo.
