I find it amazing that out of all the great stocks on the JSE a person can whittle it down to putting all their money onto one share whereas I find I want to own so many.
Do you understand now?

Well then why are you 'always amazed at guys with these small portfolios'?
Not at all.
Sorry, but where did I say you are wrong to have a small portfolio or that my portfolio out performed anything and/ or will anything in the future????

So if a guy with a small portfolio was getting double your return per year with half the amount of your costs would you still be amazed or would you be shocked?
Wouldn't have a clue to be honest. This is a long term portfolio very much geared for dividends but trying to get a bit of capital growth where possible. It hasn't done spectacularly - 25% over two years after costs. But 2/3rds of the money has been in less than a year. Thumb sucking says around 15% - 18% per year dividends in. Goal would be 15% every year, ex div - so capital could double every 5 years.

That's very interesting, MrDividend. What is your cost to profit ratio?

Hhmmmmm..........I think what I will most probably end up doing is riding Rockcastle for a couple of months then switching to Telkom for the ride up to the divi and then come back to Rockcastle. That sounds good to me.
Stay with a winner, there is no reason for divorce, you shall kick yourself looking back with regret later.
If it ever starts dropping then sell, meanwhile stay for the ride.

Merlin, I took a closer look after I saw your comment and I see its gone up about 65% in 8 months, from the 2nd May 2014 to 2nd January 2015. That's one of the best performances. That's good enough for me and if it continues in that vein then I hope to hold it for as long as it lasts. A day after I bought it there was a story in the paper about how well this sector has done and should continue to do.
On the other hand Telkom did about 80% over the same time period and they're gonna pay a divi this year so..........

I am always amazed at guys with these small portfolios. Bar one or two sectors - generally I want a share or two out of most sectors.
My main account has 31 shares and have opened another account where I can "play" with around 15 shares and a few more on my list. ETF's ? nah, there are always a few shares I do not like and the ratio's are all wrong.
I just need more money

Bread, suggest a three year hold on Rock - it goes up every month so there shall not be a confidence problem.

Hi Folks
2014 for me was an uneventful year.... below is my portforlio.... I will go for a break and revisit it for adjusting late Jan / early Feb.
I have been catching falling knives:
ADW, ABI, OAO, CZA, ESR, SCL, WCC, ZED, (SIM) & (PMZ)
Lost a lot of money.... I call it "an idiots portfolio".....
Stick to larger established companies with good quality business models, especially if you are a newbie! Looks like you are looking for quick wins. Investing should be like watching paint dry..

Rockcastle - 100%
Might have to hold this one for longer than a month.

That's a trade loss you can deduct from other trade gains/normal income.
Hope you got your tax sorted out by now Bread.
